How many people does the shift need?

Required people = demand ÷ (rate × paid hours × productive share), rounded up. Use one consistent output unit. Assumes repeatable work scales with labor; check queues, skill coverage, demand peaks and equipment constraints separately. The 85% example is not a benchmark.

How many employees do I need for a shift?

Divide the required output by the output one person can complete in the same period, then round up. Use the calculator above to compare that estimate with the people assigned.

Staffing formula

People needed = round up [demand ÷ (output per productive labor hour × paid hours per person × productive-time fraction)].

Worked example: packing 1,000 units

Fictional example: demand is 1,000 accepted units, the rate is 30 units per productive labor hour, each person is paid for 8 hours, and 85% of that time is productive. One person can complete 30 × 8 × 0.85 = 204 units. Divide 1,000 by 204 and round 4.90 up to 5 people. With 4 people assigned, estimated capacity is 816 units and the staffing gap is 1 person.

Choose comparable inputs

Use demand and paid hours for the same shift or period. Enter output per person’s productive labor hour, not a whole line’s hourly output. For different products or tasks, estimate each comparable workload separately. Do not reduce time twice: if your rate already includes breaks and delays, use 100% productive time or convert the rate to a productive-hour basis.

Does this replace a staffing plan?

No. This estimates workload capacity for repeatable work. Check skill coverage, minimum crew sizes, shared operators, bottlenecks, demand peaks and absence coverage separately before deciding how many people to schedule.
